Spokane County Sheriff’s Office warns about ‘spoofing’ scam

SPOOFINGSPOKANE COUNTY –
An alert to everyone in the Spokane area and beyond — scammers are calling people, lying that they’re with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, that there’s a warrant out for their arrest, or a family member, and they’re going to get criminally charged if they don’t pay a fee.

The scammers are good too — doing what’s called “spoofing” — where they rig the caller ID’s to make it really look like you’re getting a call from the sheriff’s office.

First off, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office says it has never and will never make these type of calls — just like all law enforcment agencies across the state. So, that’s your first red flag if you get a call like this.

Bottom line, if you get a call like this — wherever you are — hang up immediately, and call your local police or sheriff to let them know about it.

The task force says Lussier is ‘armed and dangerous.’

He’s 33 years old.

Adre’Anna Jackson: Large reward for clues leading to young girl’s killer

JACKSONLAKEWOOD — It was December 2nd, 2005, a cold, snowy day in the small community of Tillicum when 10-year old Adre’Anna Jackson went missing. Lieutenant Chris Lawler with the  Lakewood Police department recalls, “It was actually a wintry snow day and schools had been closed. They put the notice out to parents in the area that school was not going to be open that day.”

But Adre’Anna didn’t get that message. She left home that morning to walk about three blocks to school, but was never heard from again. Her mother, Yvette Gervais remembers that day well. “At 2:30pm she always came home no matter what.  I thought, ‘well maybe she decided to go play in the snow ‘cause that’s what everybody else did. A lot of working parents weren’t home so there were a ton of kids out there playing by themselves. So I went looking for her and tried not to panic, but that’s when I called 911 because she always came home no matter what.”

Police launched an extensive search of the area, but found no trace of Adre’Anna. Lawler explains,“of course, we were searching residences, houses, bringing blood hounds out. We searched the lake. We worried that she had run down to the lake and drowned.  We had the lake sonared-  the entire lake-spent the better part of a month really actively looking for her.”

But four months would go by without any word or solid leads. Then, just a few weeks shy of spring the following year, a gruesome discovery was made. “April 4, 2006, a couple of kids playing in this field, found what they thought were human remains. Found a skull and a spine,” said Lawler. The remains were identified as Adre’Anna Jackson. They were found just one mile from where she lived and across the street from a Middle School. Lawler says,  “This lot used to be pretty overgrown  with just a path going through it. But right over this little hill right here there was just a tree where people liked to dump garbage…but it was right in the thick stickers where her remains were found.”

The remains were in such poor condition  that the cause of death could not be determined. And complicating the investigation even more is the location of  the crime. “We’re right next to I-5, anybody could have come off the freeway, a predator, there’s all sorts of suspects. It could be someone that she knew. Could have been a sex offender living in the area. I mean there’s all sorts of information- if we’d gotten to  the body a little bit sooner-we might have gotten some better evidence and the cause of death and stuff, but unfortunately that’s not how it worked out for us,” explained Lawler.

But Adre’Anna’s mother and police are hopeful that whoever killed this 10-year-old child will be caught. Gervais says,  “I believe, especially with the young people that they might have seen something they didn’t really understand. or it didn’t register what it was. You get a little older, remembering things. Come say something.” Lt. Lawler also thinks that someone knows something useful and is waiting for that final piece to this tragic puzzle adding, “All along we’ve encouraged people to tell us whatever you have. It could be insignificant to you, but it could be huge to us.”

If you know what happened to 10-year-old Adre’Anna Jackson, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-T-I-P-S if you have information or remember seeing something that day. You could receive a $60,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of Adre’Anna’s killer.

‘Amber Alert’ over — suspect killed; kidnapped teen safe

$

AMBERUPDATE: Amber Alert suspect, James Dimaggio has been killed. Kidnapped teen, Hannah Anderson, is safe.
The nearly week-long manhunt finally ended late Saturday afternoon in the deep woods of Cascade, Idaho.

Searchers had been combing the Idaho wilderness for them since a horseback rider spotted them Wednesday morning.

DiMaggio’s blue Nissan Versa was two days later, with its license plate removed, roughly 60 miles northeast of Cascade, at a trail head leading into the wilderness.

Their campsite was spotted from the air Saturday, and ground units were sent in leading to the deadly confrontation.

Friday night, police identified the remains of Anderson’s 8-year-old brother Ethan found in DiMaggio’s burned out San Diego house.

The body of Ethan’s mother, Christina Anderson, had been identified earlier as a second victim of that August 4th fire.

Police believe Dimaggio killed them both.

A friend of Hannah Anderson provided a clearer picture of the relationship between DiMaggio and Hannah.

Marissa Chavez said that she was in a car with them a few months ago when the 40-year-old told Hannah he had a crush on her.

He followed it up by saying if he was her age, he would date Hannah, Chavez said.

Hannah was unnerved by the comments, but did not tell her mother because she did not want to ruin the close relationship that her parents had with DiMaggio.

After that, however, Hannah did not want to be alone with him.

Chavez also recalled a trip that DiMaggio and Hannah took to Hollywood. The trip was supposed to be for one week, but Hannah told Chavez that they came back after two days because DiMaggio was upset that she wasn’t paying enough attention to him.

“I don’t think she would have gone willingly with him at all,” she said.

Hannah was last seen August 3 at her cheerleading practice. Relatives reported the mother and children missing the next day, sparking an Amber Alert.

As of Saturday evening, Hannah is said to be in good shape, and is heading to the hospital for an evaluation.  She will be reunited with her father Sunday morning.

ORIGINAL STORY–
The burned body of a child found in a house in California has been identified as that of 8-year-old Ethan Anderson, the brother of missing Hannah Anderson and the son of the woman killed in the house, the San Diego County sheriff said Friday.
The body had been so badly burned that carrying out a DNA test proved difficult, authorities said.
The latest Amber Alert information says murder suspect, James DiMaggio, and his alleged teenage captive, could be headed to Canada. This, after a man on horseback in the middle of the Idaho wilderness had a brief conversation with two campers. The rider’s realization later that he may have been talking to DiMaggio and Anderson, had focused a nationwide manhunt for the pair on the rugged mountain area in central Idaho.

The horseback rider saw the man and girl Wednesday and struck up a brief conversation with them, Andrea Dearden, spokeswoman for the Ada County (Idaho) Sheriff’s Office, said Friday.

He was not aware of the manhunt at the time, but he called the Amber Alert tip line after he saw a news account that night and realized the pair matched the description of DiMaggio and 16-year-old Hannah Anderson, she said.

The rider’s impression of the pair was “it seemed odd but nothing as alarming,” Dearden said.

“They did speak and exchange pleasantries. I don’t think there was a lot of information exchanged,” she said. “He left the conversation believing they were camping in the area.”

The rider said the man and girl were on foot, hiking with camping gear, Dearden said.

Dearden appeared to be correcting authorities’ earlier reports that the suspect and girl were spotted by more than one horseback rider.

Investigators set up checkpoints where DiMaggio and Hannah were believed to be traveling in the River of No Return Wilderness area, about 15 miles outside Cascade, Dearden said.

The Idaho Statesman reported that searchers from more than a half-dozen local, state and federal agencies combed more than 300 square miles of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area on Friday — on foot, vehicles and in the air by helicopters.

Authorities haven’t yet evacuated any homes or businesses, she said, adding, “We have those access points secured.”

The horseback rider’s tip moved the national manhunt for DiMaggio and Hannah, who was last seen Saturday afternoon at her cheerleading practice, to the Idaho mountains.

Authorities in Southern California have been looking for Hannah and her 8-year-old brother, Ethan, after their mother was found dead inside DiMaggio’s burned-out house in the San Diego area Monday. A second body was found in the house, which may be Ethan’s.

DiMaggio was a close friend of the Anderson family, and father Brett Anderson has appealed to DiMaggio to let his daughter go.

Friday morning, investigators found DiMaggio’s car hidden by brush, its license plates removed, about six to eight miles from where the rider spotted the girl, authorities said. They confirmed the car’s ownership by its vehicle identification number, he said.

The vehicle will be examined by bomb and arson technicians to ensure it’s not rigged with explosives, Gore added. His office has said evidence found at the burned house indicates that explosives may be in the car.

The horseback rider said the man and girl appeared to be in good health, Gore said.

Authorities deem DiMaggio a dangerous suspect because he is accused of killing Hannah’s mother, Christina Anderson, and possibly Ethan as well.

A search of DiMaggio’s burned-down house led law enforcement to this conclusion: “We don’t hold anything past this person,” as one official put it.

“We think that he’s capable of anything at this point,” said Capt. Duncan Fraser of the San Diego Sheriff’s Office.

Based on what the sheriff’s investigators have seen, there is evidence that the fire and kidnapping of Hannah was a “very well-planned event,” Fraser said.

Idaho on Friday became the latest state to issue an Amber Alert for Hannah, following California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada.

FUGITIVES CAPTURED August 5, 2013 –

FUGITIVE UPDATE June 30, 2013 –
U.S. Marshals say Matt Nicka was recently spotted by Canadian authorities in Coquitlam, British Columbia, but was able to run away after getting chased.

They think he then left Coquitlam, and headed to Richmond, B.C., which is near the Vancouver airport.

WANTED BY U.S. MARSHALS January 11, 2013
U.S. Marshals are looking for a couple accused of running a massive nationwide drug operation who they said they may be hiding in the Pacific Northwest.

Nicka and Peterson are wanted by the DEA and agents said their drug ring moved more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana from a warehouses in northern California to Baltimore and then shipped it to dealers in Pennsylvania and as far south as Louisiana.

U.S. Marshals said they have enormous resources and a national network that helps them hide from the law, but they believe they may be hiding near the border of Canada and they have connections from California to Texas.

Jason Manco with the U.S. Marshals said Peterson’s 13-year-old daughter Lily is with them, so be on the lookout for a family of three.

“I think they’re definitely going to be together and I also think the daughter is going to be with Gretchen,” Manco said. “I think they would change their appearance but not to any extreme — he might have gained some weight, might of grown a beard — he’s getting to the age where he might start graying.”

Matt Nicka, 38, is the boss of organization and most likely using an assumed identity like “Anthony Thacker,” “Matt Marino” or “Calvin Bartlett” and he has a tattoo of the letter “M” on his left wrist.

Crime Stoppers of Vancouver, British Columbia, is on alert as are all of our law enforcement partners in Washington — they’re standing by for a tip from you to get Matt Nicka and Gretchen Peterson in to custody.

FBI looking for clues on serial killer Israel Keyes; possible deadly trips through Washington

KEYESSEATTLE — The FBI has released new information about serial killer Israel Keyes  and what could have been deadly trips through our state.

Before he killed himself, the 34-year-old Keyes, who often worked in construction, named two of his victims, Bill and Lorraine Currier, a middle-aged couple in Vermont that he killed in 2011. Their bodies have never been found.

Now, the FBI is hoping the public can help identify other victims.

Keyes is thought to have killed at least 11 people across the country from 2001 to 2012. The murders stopped with his arrest in Texas, one month after abducting and killing an 18-year-old woman in Anchorage. He confessed to several murders before committing suicide in prison. Police found one of Keyes’ victims, but ruled it an accident.

Keyes lived in Washington for a time and confessed to killing four people here, but we don’t know who they are and the FBI is interested in a 2008 trip he took to Seattle.

On Oct. 31, 2008, Keyes used Seattle as home base for several trips to other states during his six-day stay. He was known to have visited North Dakota and Arizona during that time and flew roundtrip from Seattle to Boston. On Nov. 5, 2008, he took a flight to Anchorage.

The FBI wants to hear from anyone who saw Keyes during that time to get an understanding of what he did during the trip.

During a jailhouse interview, Keyes explained why he wouldn’t give investigators the names of the victims, but the FBI does not believe Keyes was responsible for the murder of Mary Cooper and her daughter Susanna Stodden in 2006 on the Pinnacle Lake Trail in Snohomish County.

The FBI is working with local police departments around the country to connect any missing persons to Keyes by using his DNA.

If you remember seeing Keyes or have any information that might help investigators, contact the FBI at 800-CALL-FBI.

Tacoma police think same killer murdered two young girls

$

parellaSEATTLE – In 1986, two young girls were abducted, raped and murdered — and their killer has never been found. But now Tacoma police believe the same suspect is responsible for the murders.

On March 26, Michella Welch, 12, was watching her younger siblings at Puget Park.

“Michella and her two younger sisters decided to come to this area earlier in the day to play in the park,” Tacoma police detective Gene Miller said. “They got to the park about 10, 10:30 a.m. and remained for about an hour. Michella needed to go back home and get lunch for her and her sisters, so she left the park leaving her two sisters here.”

Police say that she rode her bike home to make sandwiches, but when she got back her sisters had left to use a nearby restroom.

“I believe that it was while she was looking around for her sisters that she was approached, abducted and taken down to the gulch area and sexually assaulted and murdered,” Miller said.

A search team found the young girl’s body that night, about a 1/4-mile in to the woods.

“There was DNA evidence left behind at the scene by the suspect and that evidence has been processed on multiple occasions due to updated technology,” Miller said.

The DNA never came up a match in the national database, but five month’s after Welch was killed, another young girl was murdered in another park 3 miles away.

“She was always in motion, she was active, she was about fun,” Jenny Bastian’s mother, Pattie, said.

Pattie’s daughter Jenny was 13-years-old and was riding her bike in Point Definance Park when she disappeared on Aug. 4, 1986. She had been training for a long bike ride at camp.

“Jennifer was petite — small for her age — and so she was concerned that she wouldn’t be able to keep up with the big kids, so she was practicing. And she was intent with this practicing. It was every day, coming down here with a friend and doing the 5-mile ride,” Pattie said.

But that day, Jenny’s friend couldn’t make and her dad told her it would be OK to ride by herself.

“She left the house right around 2 p.m. and was seen by multiple people making it to the park. In fact, making as many as two, three, maybe even four trips around the 5-mile drive prior to her disappearance,” Miller said.

When she didn’t come home, police, family and friends searched for Jenny for more than three weeks.

“It wasn’t until Aug, 28 that her remains were located by detectives who had been brought out to the scene by an odor along the 5-mile drive,” Miller said.

The young girl had been sexually assaulted and strangled. Miller believes that one man is responsible for the girls’ murder and he’s hoping that by connecting the crime, it will also help him find the killer.

Det gene miller

“Knowing that we have a suspect profile in CODIS from the Welch homicide and then being able to link them scientifically, using mitochondrial DNA, effectively gives us a suspect profile in the Bastian case,” Miller said. “Therefore, when we identify our suspect in one case we effectively identify our suspect in both cases.”

A new FBI profile indicates the killer was likely a transient who got around on foot or bicycle. He carried a knife and whether he was aware of it or not, he also had an intestinal parasite.

“You’re looking at somebody because of their transient behavior and probably with poor hygiene. Clothes, likely the same every day, somewhat disheveled, likely an odor,” Miller said.

Police are convinced that someone saw something or knows something that will crack the case.

“It will be solved by somebody taking the time to pick up the phone and call. Somebody in the past had a thought in their brain and they didn’t call. And what you’re doing today will hopefully motivate them to make that call,” Miller said.

“Don’t think about somebody that you might think did it. That’s what the police are for. Give them the name and let them find out,” Pattie Bastain said.

If you have any information that might identify the man who murdered Michelle Welch and Jenny Bastain, call Crime Stoppers of Tacoma Pierce County at 800-222-TIPS.

Here are some more details on the suspected killer:

  •  Might have lived in Tacoma’s North End about 1986 or had family who lived there.
  • Would have been very familiar with North End parks, trails and wooded areas.
  • Might have been semi-transient in 1986 and stayed in the parks, causing a disheveled appearance.
  • Probably got around on foot or bicycle; possibly used the bus.
  • Routinely carried a knife.
  • Likely had mental health issues and could have been jailed or institutionalized since 1986.
  • Might have shown assaultive behavior toward family and might have become estranged from them.
  • Probably did not have stable employment and might have turned to petty thefts and foraging.
  • Had a disease called Strongyloides stercoralis, which eventually would have caused abdominal pain, heartburn, a dry cough, rashes and intermittent episodes of diarrhea and constipation.

sketchWANTED IN KENT –
Kent police are on the hunt for a man accused of sneaking into an East Hill apartment — and sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl on Aug. 6.

According to police, the man entered the apartment through an unlocked front door and forced the teen into a bedroom. Detectives said the suspect pointed a knife at her, pushed her on a bed and forcibly kissed her before a noise spooked him and he ran.

Kent police have compiled a good sketch of the suspect and said no similar attacks have been reported. The apartment was located at the Village of Lake Meridian complex in Kent’s East Hill area.

The suspect is described as a white man, about 28 years old, with dark hair, light-colored eyes, a thick build and small bump on his nose. He has a Yin and Yang tattoo on his left forearm and was wearing a red bandana. The girl said

“We need to get this guy — we need to get him off the streets quick. He was bold. He walked into this residence without care, and brandished the knife, and our concern is, he’s going to get worse and he’s going to do something more violent,” Kent police detective Melanie Frazier.

“The victim also mentioned that he had a foul smell of body odor and he was unkempt and dirty, making us think that possibly he’s a transient in the area,” Frazier said.

If you can help Kent police figure out who this man is  – and before he strikes again — call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
